Louisville sits in Boulder County on Colorado's Front Range, where spring and early-summer storms rolling off the foothills into the Denver–Boulder corridor have repeatedly spun up tornadoes. Activity clusters tightly in late May, June, and July, though tornadoes have also arrived well outside that window — an F2 touched down on October 16, 1980, and tornadoes struck again on October 4, 2004.
Some days brought multiple tornadoes at once. On June 3, 1981, an F2 tracked 2.3 miles, injuring 42 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage; a second F2 and several F1 tornadoes were confirmed the same day. On June 15, 1988, an F3 ran 2.5 miles and injured 7 people, with $27,500,000 in damage, alongside other tornadoes that day. Earlier, an F3 on May 18, 1975 carved a 4.1-mile path up to 440 yards wide.
