Longmont sits on the plains of Boulder County, Colorado, where St. Vrain Creek emerges from the Front Range foothills — squarely in the corridor where late-spring and early-summer storms rolling off the mountains spin up tornadoes. The area's tornado history clusters heavily in May and June, with a scattering through July and August and the occasional out-of-season surprise, including an F2 on October 16, 1980.
Certain dates stand out. On June 4, 1976, a swarm of tornadoes touched down around the area in a single day, among them an F2 that cut a 1.5-mile path. On June 3, 1981, an F2 injured 42 people along a 2.3-mile track and caused $27.5 million in property damage.
