Greenwood Village sits on the high plains of Arapahoe County, on the south side of the Denver metro between the Cherry Creek valley and the I-25 corridor. Its tornado history follows the local season closely: activity clusters in late May, June, and July, when storms coming off the Front Range drift east across the southern suburbs.
Some of those storms turned serious. On June 3, 1981, an F2 tornado — one of several tornadoes in the area that day — tracked 2.3 miles and injured 42 people. On June 15, 1988, an F3 cut a 2.5-mile path roughly 200 yards wide, injuring 7 and doing heavy damage; an F1 and an F2 also touched down nearby that day. And on May 18, 1975, an F3 stayed on the ground for 4.1 miles, with a path as much as 440 yards across.
Recent seasons fit the same rhythm. An EF1 touched down on June 22, 2023. On May 18, 2025, an EF2 tracked 0.94 miles at up to 50 yards wide, with an EF1 striking the same day, and another EF1 passed through on July 14, 2025.
