Greeley sits on the high plains of Weld County, east of Colorado's Front Range, where spring and summer moisture pushing upslope into converging plains winds makes tornadoes a familiar part of the warm season, with activity clustering from May through July.
Some of those days have turned destructive. On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado tore a 38.69-mile path up to 1,760 yards wide through the area, killing one person, injuring 78, and causing $147 million in property damage. Decades earlier, an F3 struck on May 15, 1952, carving a 7.4-mile track and injuring five people, and an F2 on June 10, 1990 stayed on the ground for 23 miles. Strong tornadoes have appeared in recent years as well: an EF3 on June 5, 2015 cut a 6.71-mile path up to 440 yards wide, and an EF2 on June 7, 2021 tracked 7.5 miles and caused $530,500 in property damage.
Just as characteristic of Weld County are days when weaker tornadoes touch down in bunches — June 4, 1976 brought a string of them, including F2s, and EF0 tornadoes dropped repeatedly across the area on May 21, 2020. Nor is the season rigid: an EF0 touched down on March 23, 2019, and F1 tornadoes struck on October 4, 2004.
