Fountain sits in El Paso County, where the Front Range gives way to the high plains south of Colorado Springs, and its tornado history carries the character of that plains edge: activity clusters in late spring and summer, when storms build off the mountains and move east over open country.
The late 1970s brought a run of significant tornadoes. An F2 struck on April 11, 1977, cutting a mile-long, 100-yard-wide path and causing $275,000 in property damage. Two months later, on June 13, 1977, an F3 tracked 4.9 miles through the area, and another F3 followed on June 24, 1979, running 4.3 miles, injuring one person, and causing $275,000 in damage.
May 29, 2001 brought a burst of tornadoes in a single day, including an F2 that carved a half-mile path as much as 200 yards wide and injured four people, and a second F2 that injured five along a shorter track.
Recent activity has run weaker. EF0 tornadoes touched down repeatedly between 2011 and 2019, an EF0 was recorded on June 23, 2023, an EF1 followed on July 20, 2023, and another tornado was documented near the city on March 26, 2024.
