Evans sits in Weld County on Colorado's eastern plains, along the South Platte River east of the Front Range, in country where spring and summer thunderstorms regularly spin up tornadoes. Most of the twisters documented near the city have been brief and weak, and they cluster heavily in the May-through-August window.
The area has also seen genuinely dangerous storms. On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado tore a 38.69-mile path up to 1,760 yards wide across Weld County, killing one person, injuring 78, and causing $147 million in property damage. Decades earlier, on May 15, 1952, an F3 tracked 7.4 miles and injured five people. More recently, an EF3 touched down on June 5, 2015, carving a 6.71-mile path 440 yards wide, and on June 7, 2021 an EF2 ran for 7.5 miles and caused $530,500 in damage.
Single days here can produce whole families of tornadoes: several touched down on June 4, 1976, including tornadoes rated F2, and a swarm of EF0s dropped around the area on May 21, 2020. Tornadoes have even arrived in autumn, with a cluster of weak twisters, F1s among them, spinning up on October 4, 2004.
