Dakota Ridge sits in Jefferson County, Colorado, where the Front Range foothills meet the western edge of the Denver metro area, and storms moving off the higher terrain toward the adjacent plains have repeatedly produced tornadoes nearby. Activity here clusters in late spring and early summer, and some June days have produced more than one touchdown.
On June 15, 1988, an F3 tornado tracked 2.5 miles along a damage path 200 yards wide, injuring 7 people and causing $27.5 million in property damage; an F2 the same day cut a half-mile swath 400 yards across and did $2.75 million in damage. On June 3, 1981, an F2 injured 42 people along a 2.3-mile track and likewise left $27.5 million in damage, and another F2 touched down that same day. Earlier F2s in the area include a May 30, 1976 tornado that traveled 5.4 miles and a June 8, 1986 tornado that injured 6 people.
More recent seasons have brought EF-scale events: EF1 tornadoes touched down on June 7, 2009, June 8, 2014, and June 22, 2023, and an EF0 on September 6, 2019 showed the season can stretch into September.
