West Puente Valley lies in the San Gabriel Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, and its tornado history looks nothing like the springtime pattern of the Plains. Here the threat arrives with cool-season Pacific storms, and the area's tornado dates fall mostly between late fall and early spring, when cold, unstable systems sweep off the ocean and into the valley.
The area has felt genuinely damaging tornadoes. On March 1, 1983, an F2 tornado carved a 3.5-mile path up to 100 yards wide, injuring 30 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. A few months before that, on November 9, 1982, an F2 tracked 10 miles with a width that reached 1,300 yards and did $2,750,000 in damage. An earlier F2, on November 7, 1966, ran 10.3 miles and injured 10 people.
Tornadoes have kept appearing in the decades since. An EF1 touched down on January 19, 2010, and another EF1 struck on March 22, 2023, a year that also produced EF0 tornadoes on February 23 and May 4. An EF0 followed on March 13, 2025. Many of the area's tornadoes have been brief, lower-end events, but the winters of 1982 and 1983 stand as reminders that the San Gabriel Valley can produce a tornado capable of injuring people and wrecking property.
