The valley has seen genuinely damaging tornadoes. On November 7, 1966, an F2 tracked 10.3 miles on a path just 50 yards wide, injuring 10 people and causing $275,000 in property damage. On November 9, 1982, another F2 plowed a 10-mile path that swelled to 1,300 yards across, causing $2,750,000 in damage. And on March 1, 1983, an F2 carved a 3.5-mile path through the area, injuring 30 people and leaving $27,500,000 in property damage — a destructive blow for a region where tornadoes are typically brief and weak.
