Valinda sits in the San Gabriel Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, and its tornado history follows Southern California's cool-season rhythm: most of the area's tornadoes have spun up between November and March, when Pacific storm systems push cold, unstable air across the valley.
Some of those storms have done real damage. On November 9, 1982, an F2 tornado tracked 10 miles with a width reaching 1,300 yards and caused $2,750,000 in property damage. A few months later, on March 1, 1983, another F2 carved a 3.5-mile, 100-yard-wide path, injuring 30 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. Years earlier, on November 7, 1966, an F2 followed a 10.3-mile track through the area and injured 10 people.
Weaker touchdowns are more typical of the region. An EF1 struck on January 19, 2010, and an EF0 followed on December 12, 2014. The winter and spring of 2023 brought a flurry of activity near Valinda: an EF0 on February 23, an EF1 on March 22, and EF0 touchdowns on May 4. An EF0 also touched down on March 13, 2025.
Tornadoes have occasionally arrived outside the cool season — an F0 touched down on June 16, 1995, and another F0 on May 30, 1984 — but for Valinda, the months when winter storms roll in off the Pacific remain the season to watch.
