Tustin sits on the flat plain of central Orange County, California, where the Santa Ana valley opens toward the coast, and the tornadoes that have touched the area have arrived on a distinctly Californian schedule: spun up by cool-season Pacific storms pushing through Southern California from late fall into early spring, rather than by the warm-season supercells of the country's interior.
November has a hard history here. On November 7, 1966, an F2 tornado carved a 10.3-mile path roughly 50 yards wide, injuring 10 people and causing $275,000 in property damage. On November 9, 1982, another F2 plowed a 10-mile track that widened to roughly 1,300 yards, causing $2,750,000 in property damage.
More often, though, the area's tornadoes have been brief and weak — wet-season F0s and F1s like those that touched down in the winters of 1993 and 1998, when Pacific fronts crossed the Orange County lowlands.
That winter rhythm has carried into recent years. An EF1 struck on January 19, 2010. In 2023, an EF0 touched down on February 23, an EF1 followed on March 22, and another EF0 arrived on May 4 as the storm season stretched late. An EF0 touched down on March 13, 2025, once again in the heart of the region's wet season.
