Turlock sits in Stanislaus County, on the flat floor of California's San Joaquin Valley, and its tornado history follows the valley's own rhythm rather than the Great Plains script. Tornadoes here have tended to arrive in the cool season, when Pacific storm systems pull cold, unstable air across the Central Valley: local touchdowns have come in late winter and spring, in months like February, March, and April, and again in late fall and early winter, in November and December.
An F2 tornado struck on April 27, 1953, carving a short path about a tenth of a mile long and roughly ten yards wide and causing $2,750 in property damage. Early March 1978 brought a flurry of weak tornadoes, with an F1 touchdown on March 1 followed by further F1 activity on March 4. The cool-season pattern showed up again with F1 tornadoes on November 22 and December 12, 1996, and with an F1 and an F0 both touching down on December 16, 2002. The springs of 2005 and 2006 produced a string of weak touchdowns as well, including multiple F0 tornadoes on March 28, 2006.
That rhythm has carried into recent years: an EF0 on February 9, 2009, an EF1 on November 15, 2015, an EF0 on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2015, another EF0 on April 27, 2016, and, more recently, an EF0 that touched down on April 1, 2025.
