Santa Maria, CA Tornado History — 5 Tornadoes Since 1950

Santa Maria, California has experienced five tornadoes within a 25-mile radius since 1950, according to NOAA Storm Prediction Center records. All of these events have been weak tornadoes, with four rated EF0 and one rated EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which classifies tornado intensity based on damage. None of the recorded tornadoes resulted in fatalities.

The costliest tornado on record was an F0 that struck on December 29, 1991, causing $275 in property damage along a 0.1-mile path with a maximum width of just 10 yards.

The relatively low frequency and weak intensity of tornadoes near Santa Maria reflect the coastal California climate, where the marine influence and typical atmospheric conditions are generally not conducive to the severe thunderstorm development that spawns tornadoes.
