San Ramon sits in the San Ramon Valley of Contra Costa County, hemmed in by the East Bay hills on one side and the slopes of Mount Diablo on the other. Tornadoes in this part of California keep a different calendar than they do in the Plains: around San Ramon they cluster in the rainy season, arriving with the winter and early-spring storms that cross the Bay Area.
The area has seen real damage from such storms. An F2 tornado struck the area on January 11, 1951, carving a 5.7-mile path and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. An F1 followed on April 1, 1958, and another F1 touched down on January 14, 1980. Brief F0 tornadoes brushed the area on March 29, 1982, on back-to-back days — September 18 and 19, 1989 — and again on December 17, 1992, and April 25, 1994.
That cool-season rhythm has continued in more recent decades. F0 tornadoes touched down on February 19, 1998, and December 6, 1998, and an EF1 spun up on January 23, 2010, in the depths of another East Bay winter.
