Rancho San Diego's tornado history reads nothing like the Plains'. In this unincorporated corner of San Diego County, where the Sweetwater River valley opens between Mount Helix, El Cajon, and the Jamul foothills, tornadoes have arrived almost exclusively with the cool-season Pacific storms of winter and early spring, spinning up in the unstable air behind cold fronts rather than from warm-season supercells.
The dates tell that story. An F1 tornado struck the area on February 21, 1980, in the heart of the local wet season, and another F1 touched down on March 19, 1991. February also produced F0 tornadoes on the 4th in 1985, the 8th in 1998, and the 23rd in both 1971 and 2005, while January saw F0s on the 18th in 1979 and the 14th in 1990. Even the outliers hugged the storm season's shoulders: an F1 on April 13, 1956, an F1 on November 10, 2000 as an early-season system pushed through, and F0s on March 18, 1982 and March 11, 2006.
