Ramona sits in the Santa Maria Valley of inland San Diego County, in the foothill backcountry northeast of the city of San Diego. Tornadoes here are largely a cool-season affair, spun up when winter and early-spring Pacific storm systems drag unstable air across the valley.
That rhythm showed itself in March 1991, when an F1 tornado struck the area on March 19, 1991, and another F1 followed on March 27, 1991, just over a week later. The winter of 1998 brought more activity: an F1 on January 29, 1998, then an F0 on February 8, 1998. Other cool-season touchdowns include F0 tornadoes on January 18, 1979, February 4, 1985, and January 14, 1990, while an F1 arrived with late-autumn weather on November 10, 2000, and F0 tornadoes were recorded on March 11, 2006.
