Montclair sits in the Pomona Valley of southwestern San Bernardino County, on the urbanized plain along Interstate 10 at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Tornadoes in this part of Southern California arrive mainly with cool-season Pacific storms, whose cold air aloft and low-level wind shear can spin up brief circulations over the valley floor — a pattern visible as far back as an F1 tornado on November 25, 1965.
A destructive F2 tornado struck on November 9, 1982, tracking 10 miles on a path up to 1,300 yards wide and causing $2,750,000 in property damage; an F0 touched down in the area that same day. Other cool-season F1 tornadoes followed on March 16, 1986, December 7, 1992, and January 14, 1993, echoing earlier late-winter F1s on March 17, 1977 and March 30, 1982.
Not every event has kept to winter: F0 tornadoes were recorded on June 16, 1995 and on August 14, 2004, during the dry season.
