Livermore occupies the eastern reach of Alameda County, set in the Livermore Valley between the Diablo Range and the wind-raked Altamont hills. Tornadoes here are a creature of California's wet season, spinning up when vigorous Pacific lows push cold, unstable air across the inland Bay Area.
January appears again and again in the valley's tornado dates. On January 11, 1951, an F2 tornado tracked 5.7 miles through the area along a narrow, 10-yard-wide path, causing $2,750,000 in property damage. An F1 touched down on January 14, 1980, and an EF1 struck on January 23, 2010.
Other, weaker touchdowns have been scattered through the cooler months: F0 tornadoes on March 29, 1982, December 17, 1992, April 25, 1994, February 19 and again March 29 of 1998, and December 26, 2005. Early autumn has produced tornadoes as well, with F0s arriving on consecutive days, September 18 and 19, 1989.
