Tornadoes around Jurupa Valley bear little resemblance to the long-tracked storms of the Great Plains. In this corner of Riverside County, along the Santa Ana River at the western edge of the Inland Empire, they have tended to be brief, weak spin-ups embedded in the Pacific storm systems that cross Southern California in winter and early spring. That cool-season signature runs through the area's tornado history: an F1 on March 17, 1977, an F0 on January 4, 1978, another on January 20, 1982, F0 touchdowns on March 20, 1991, and February 8, 1993, and further F0s on February 17, 2000, February 24, 2001, February 26, 2005, and March 4, 2005. Earlier events include an F0 on April 6, 1955, and an F1 on November 25, 1965.
A stark departure from that pattern came on May 22, 2008, when an EF2 tornado tracked 2.8 miles with a path up to 75 yards wide, injuring one person and causing $350,000 in property damage. EF0 tornadoes touched down the same day, and another followed on May 23, 2008.
The warm season has produced tornadoes here as well: an F0 struck on September 7, 1976, and brief EF0 touchdowns came on August 12, 2012, and September 9, 2012.
