Duarte lies in Los Angeles County's San Gabriel Valley, pressed against the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains east of downtown Los Angeles. Its tornado history follows a distinctly Southern California rhythm: the events in the local record cluster in the cool season, from late fall through early spring, when Pacific storm systems sweep ashore — a different calendar from the spring-peaked tornado climate of the interior United States.
The area has seen genuinely damaging tornadoes. An F2 struck on November 7, 1966, tracking 10.3 miles along a 50-yard-wide path, injuring 10 people and doing $275,000 in property damage. On November 9, 1982, another F2 carved a path 10 miles long and 1,300 yards wide, causing $2.75 million in damage. A few months later, an F2 on March 1, 1983, injured 30 people along a 3.5-mile track and left $27.5 million in property damage.
In 2023, the cool season brought a flurry of touchdowns near Duarte, including EF0s on February 23 and May 4 and an EF1 on March 22, 2023. An EF0 followed on March 13, 2025 — another cool-season event, true to the pattern that has defined tornado weather in this corner of the San Gabriel Valley.
