Covina sits in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, where tornadoes arrive not with the spring supercells of the Plains but with Pacific storm systems: most of the area's events have come in the cooler months from late fall into early spring, when winter fronts push unstable marine air up against the San Gabriel Mountains.
On November 7, 1966, an F2 tornado tracked 10.3 miles through the area, injuring 10 people and causing $275,000 in property damage. Another F2 struck on November 9, 1982, carving a 10-mile path as wide as 1,300 yards and leaving $2,750,000 in damage, and weaker tornadoes touched down in the area that same day.
Brief, weak touchdowns have continued into the modern era. An EF0 touched down on December 12, 2014, and 2023 brought repeated activity: an EF0 on February 23, an EF1 on March 22, and another EF0 on May 4.
