Springdale sits in the Ozark hills of northwest Arkansas, straddling the Washington–Benton county line, and tornadoes have struck the area in every season. On June 12, 1970, an F3 tornado tracked 51.8 miles through the region, killing one person and injuring 45. On November 15, 1988, an F2 tornado took a life and injured 12 along a 28-mile path — a reminder that northwest Arkansas gets a second severe-weather season in late autumn.
The cold months carry risk of their own. On December 31, 2010, an EF3 carved a 21.1-mile path through the area, killing four people and injuring ten. And on March 30, 2022, an EF3 struck the Springdale area, injuring seven and causing $20 million in property damage along a compact 5.2-mile track.
Spring remains the heart of the season here. On May 26, 2024, a swarm of tornadoes crossed the region, among them an EF3 that injured two along a 7.9-mile path and an EF2 that ran 7.4 miles, spread 3,000 yards wide, and caused $80 million in damage. That same autumn brought more: EF2 tornadoes struck on November 4, 2024, one of them tracking 32.9 miles. Activity has continued since, including an EF2 on May 20, 2025, and EF1 tornadoes on June 18, 2025.
