North Little Rock sits on the north bank of the Arkansas River in Pulaski County, at the center of a metro area that tornadoes have crossed again and again. Spring has repeatedly brought violent storms. On April 11, 1965, an F4 tornado killed 6 people and injured 200 along a 4.7-mile path. On March 1, 1997, an F4 killed 10 people and injured 40 on a 14-mile track, and a second F4 that same day killed 5 and injured 180. On April 28, 2014, an EF4 carved a 41.1-mile path as wide as 1,320 yards, killing 16 people, injuring 193, and causing $223,450,000 in property damage. On March 31, 2023, an EF3 tracked 34.23 miles through the area, injuring 54 people and causing $90,000,000 in damage.
The threat here is not limited to spring. An F3 on December 2, 1982 killed 2 people and injured 53, and on December 24, 1982 another F3 killed 1 person. An F2 on November 16, 1988 killed 5 people and injured 60 along a 49-mile path, and an F3 on January 22, 1999 killed 3 and injured 72. From late-winter systems to April supercells, central Arkansas storms have made tornado readiness a year-round concern in North Little Rock.
