Trussville lies along the Cahaba River on the northeastern edge of the Birmingham metro area, in terrain where central Alabama's spring storm systems have repeatedly produced violent tornadoes nearby. An F4 struck on April 15, 1956, killing 25 people and injuring 200 along a 21.3-mile path. An F5 hit on April 4, 1977, killing 22 and injuring 130, and another F5 followed on April 9, 1998, carving a 30.3-mile track that left 32 dead and 259 injured. On April 27, 2011, violent tornadoes again swept the region: an EF4 killed 64 people and injured 1,500 along an 80.68-mile path, while a second EF4 that day tracked 97.33 miles and killed 22.
Spring is not the whole story here. An EF3 on January 23, 2012 killed one person and injured 75 along a 15.69-mile path, and another EF3 on January 26, 2021 killed one and injured 30. EF2 tornadoes touched down on Christmas Day, December 25, 2015; an F4 struck on November 24, 2001, injuring 22; and EF1 and EF0 tornadoes touched down on November 25, 2025.
