Auburn sits in Lee County in east-central Alabama, close to the Georgia line, in a corridor where Gulf moisture can fuel tornadoes in spring and in the depths of winter alike.
Spring has repeatedly brought violent tornadoes to the area. On April 18, 1953, an F3 tornado carved a 39.8-mile path up to 400 yards wide, killing 8 people and injuring 495. On April 28, 2011, an EF4 tracked 44.18 miles at up to 880 yards wide, killing 7 and injuring 30. And on March 3, 2019, an EF4 up to 1,600 yards wide ran 68.04 miles through the region, killing 23 people and injuring 90, while a separate EF2 that same day tracked 29.07 miles nearby. An EF3 on April 29, 2014 injured 13 along an 11.45-mile path.
The cool season carries its own danger here.
