Talladega lies in east-central Alabama's Coosa Valley, on the low ground between the Coosa River and the Talladega Mountains, terrain that Gulf-fed storm systems cross with regularity.
Violent spring tornadoes mark the city's history. An F4 struck on May 2, 1953, killing seven people along a path of more than twelve miles. On May 27, 1973, another F4 tore a 139-mile track up to 800 yards wide through the area, killing seven and injuring 199. An F4 on March 27, 1994 cut a 50-mile path as much as 880 yards wide; 22 people died and property damage reached $27.5 million. On March 25, 2021, EF3 tornadoes swept the area again — one ran 38 miles at widths up to 1,700 yards and killed six people.
Cool-season outbreaks are part of life here as well. An F4 struck on January 25, 1964, killing 10, and an F3 on December 4, 1983 killed two people and injured 51. November 24, 2001 brought a cluster of tornadoes in a single day, one of them an F2 that injured 15. An EF2 carved a swath up to 2,000 yards wide on February 6, 2008, EF1 tornadoes touched down on December 29, 2024, and an EF2 on March 16, 2025 killed one person — a reminder that in Talladega the threat runs from late fall through spring.
