Prichard lies in Mobile County, Alabama, directly north of Mobile and only a few miles from the head of Mobile Bay. That Gulf Coast setting shapes its tornado history: alongside the familiar spring severe-weather season, tornadoes here have repeatedly arrived in late autumn and the depths of winter, when cool-season storm systems sweep across the central Gulf states.
An F3 that struck on April 18, 1950 injured 15 people along a 14-mile path. On November 3, 1968, another F3 tracked 70.4 miles with a damage swath up to 400 yards wide, injuring 18. An F2 on February 10, 1981 injured 62 people and caused $2,750,000 in property damage along a 1.5-mile track, and on January 26, 1996 an F1 killed one person on a two-mile path that widened to 500 yards.
The cool-season pattern has carried into recent decades. An EF2 on December 25, 2012 carved a 5.15-mile path and caused $1,350,000 in damage, and an EF2 on January 12, 2023 stayed on the ground for 11.65 miles. Spring remains dangerous as well: an EF2 injured four people on March 9, 2011, tornadoes struck again on March 31, 2022, and an EF1 followed on April 10, 2024. An EF0 touched down on May 29, 2025.
