This overview was written July 28, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.
Prattville sits in Autauga County in central Alabama, just northwest of Montgomery, in a corridor where Gulf moisture drives two distinct severe-weather seasons: the familiar spring window of March and April, and a cool-season window running from November into January.
Spring has produced violent days here. On May 3, 1984, an F3 tornado cut a seven-mile path near the city, killing 5 people and injuring 37. On February 17, 2008, an EF3 tracked 14.65 miles through the area and injured 50. April 2011 brought repeated blows: a swarm of tornadoes on April 16, 2011, including an EF3 that killed 3 people, and then, on April 28, 2011, an EF4 that ran 44.18 miles on a path up to 880 yards wide, killing 7, injuring 30, and causing $167 million in property damage.
The cool season has proven dangerous as well. An F2 on December 23, 1956 tracked 121.7 miles through the region, and an F3 on November 25, 1979 injured 20 people. More recently, an EF2 on November 30, 2022 killed 2 people, and on January 12, 2023 an EF3 traveled 82.31 miles on a path as wide as 1,500 yards, killing 7 and injuring 16. In this part of central Alabama, tornado readiness matters in December and January as much as it does in April.
