Phenix City sits on the Chattahoochee River in east-central Alabama, across from Columbus, Georgia, where Russell County meets Lee County, and its tornadoes cluster in March and April, with a secondary window running from late fall into winter.
Severe tornadoes hit the area in back-to-back springs early in its history. An F3 tornado struck on April 18, 1953, killing 8 people and injuring 495 along a 39.8-mile track. On March 14, 1954, another F3 killed 2 and injured 20 while cutting a path up to 1,480 yards wide.
The modern era has stayed active. An EF2 on March 1, 2007 tracked 11.74 miles and caused $28,103,000 in property damage, and an EF3 on April 29, 2014 injured 13 people along an 11.45-mile path. On March 3, 2019, a violent EF4 tore across the region on a 68.04-mile path as much as 1,600 yards wide, killing 23 people and injuring 90; a second tornado that same day, an EF2, tracked 29.07 miles. Activity continues into the present: an EF1 touched down on April 6, 2025.
