Northport sits in Tuscaloosa County on the north bank of the Black Warrior River, in a part of west-central Alabama where violent tornadoes are a recurring fact of life. On April 27, 2011, an EF4 tornado carved an 80.68-mile path up to 2,600 yards wide through the area, killing 64 people and injuring 1,500, while other EF4 and EF3 tornadoes swept the surrounding counties that same day.
That day had grim precedents. An F5 that killed 58 people along a 202.5-mile track crossed the area on March 4, 1966. On April 3, 1974, an F4 tracked 110.6 miles, killing 3 and injuring 178, and on April 9, 1998, an F5 as wide as 1,320 yards killed 32 and injured 259 along its 30.3-mile path.
Spring dominates the local calendar — the events of 1966, 1974, 1998, and 2011 all fell in March or April, as did an EF3 that injured 5 people along a 50.13-mile track on March 25, 2021 — but cold-season tornadoes strike here too. An F4 killed 11 people and injured 144 along an 18-mile path on December 16, 2000, and an EF2 tracked 39.02 miles through the area on January 12, 2023. On March 15, 2025, an EF2 with a 39.48-mile path moved through as well.
