Mountain Brook occupies the wooded ridges of Shades Valley in Jefferson County, just over Red Mountain from downtown Birmingham, in a stretch of central Alabama where spring storm systems have repeatedly driven destructive tornadoes through the metro area.
An F4 struck on April 15, 1956, killing 25 people and injuring 200 along a 21.3-mile path. Violent April days returned in later decades: on April 4, 1977, an F5 cut a 14.7-mile track that left 22 dead and 130 injured, and on April 9, 1998, an F5 carved a 30.3-mile path, killing 32 and injuring 259. On April 27, 2011, an EF4 tracked 80.68 miles at widths reaching 2,600 yards, killing 64 and injuring 1,500, while a second EF4 that same day ran 97.33 miles and killed 22. March has brought dangerous storms to this area as well, including F4s on March 5, 1963 and March 6, 1967.
The cold months carry genuine risk in this part of Alabama too. An F4 on January 25, 1964 killed 10 people, an EF2 touched down on December 25, 2015, an EF3 on January 26, 2021 killed one person and injured 30, and an EF1 crossed the area on November 25, 2025.
