Millbrook sits in Elmore County, just north of Montgomery in central Alabama, where tornadoes arrive in two distinct stretches of the year: the spring severe-weather season of March and April, and a cool-season window running from November into the winter months.
Spring has brought violent storms. On April 28, 2011, an EF4 tornado tore a 44.18-mile path up to 880 yards wide through the area, killing seven people, injuring 30, and causing $167 million in property damage. Earlier that month, on April 16, 2011, a series of tornadoes swept the area, among them an EF3 that killed three people. Decades before, an F3 on May 3, 1984 killed five people and injured 37 along a path 800 yards wide, and an EF3 on February 17, 2008 injured 50 along a 14.65-mile track.
The cool season carries real danger here as well. An EF2 on November 30, 2022 killed two people, and on January 12, 2023 an EF3 traveled 82.31 miles with a width of 1,500 yards, claiming seven lives. A cluster of tornadoes struck on December 29, 2024, and an EF1 followed on February 16, 2025, reminders that tornado risk in this part of Alabama extends well beyond spring.
