About Tornadoes in Hueytown

This overview was written July 28, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Hueytown sits in the western reaches of the Birmingham metro area in Jefferson County, Alabama, where the storm systems that sweep central Alabama each spring have repeatedly put tornadoes on the ground nearby.

On April 15, 1956, an F4 tornado tore a 21.3-mile path through the area, killing 25 people and injuring 200. On April 4, 1977, an F5 ground along a 14.7-mile track, killing 22 and injuring 130. On April 9, 1998, another F5 carved a 30.3-mile path up to 1,320 yards wide, killing 32 people and injuring 259. Then came April 27, 2011, when tornado after tornado crossed the region in a single day — among them an EF4 that stayed on the ground for 80.68 miles, killing 64 people and injuring 1,500, and an EF3 that tracked 72.13 miles and killed 7.

The danger here is not confined to spring. An EF3 on January 23, 2012 killed one person and injured 75; an EF2 struck on Christmas Day, December 25, 2015; and an EF3 on January 26, 2021 killed one person and injured 30.
