Hoover sits just south of Birmingham, straddling the Jefferson-Shelby county line in central Alabama's ridge-and-valley country, and the tornado history around the city reflects that corridor's violent past.
Violent spring tornadoes have struck again and again. An F4 tore a 21.3-mile path on April 15, 1956, killing 25 people and injuring 200. An F5 struck on April 4, 1977, killing 22, and another F5 on April 9, 1998, killed 32 people and injured 259 along a 30.3-mile track. On April 27, 2011, EF4 tornadoes crossed the region in a single afternoon: one killed 64 people and injured 1,500 on an 80.68-mile path, while another claimed 22 lives along a 97.33-mile track.
The cool season has produced its own scars. An F4 on January 25, 1964, killed 10 people. An EF3 on January 23, 2012, killed one person and injured 75; EF2 tornadoes moved through on December 25, 2015; and an EF3 on January 26, 2021, killed one and injured 30 along a 10.4-mile path. More recently, an EF3 tracked through the area on March 31, 2022, and an EF1 touched down on November 25, 2025 — evidence that tornado weather around Hoover spans the calendar.
