Homewood sits in Jefferson County on Birmingham's south side, tucked into Shades Valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, squarely in the path of the storm systems that sweep across central Alabama each spring. On April 15, 1956, an F4 tore a 21.3-mile path through the area, killing 25 people and injuring 200. An F5 followed on April 4, 1977, killing 22 and injuring 130 along a 14.7-mile track, and another F5 struck on April 8, 1998, killing 32 and injuring 259 on a 30.3-mile path. April 27, 2011 brought a string of tornadoes to the area in a single day, among them an EF4 that traveled 80.68 miles, killed 64 people, and injured 1,500. Long-track EF3s returned on March 25, 2021, one running 50.13 miles and another 79.66 miles across the region.
The cold months carry real danger here as well. An F4 struck on January 25, 1964, killing 10 people, and an F3 on February 14, 1952 killed one person and injured 26. EF2 tornadoes touched down on December 25, 2015; an EF3 on January 26, 2021 killed one person and injured 30; and an EF1 passed through as recently as November 25, 2025.
