On April 15, 1956, an F4 tornado tore a 21.3-mile path through the countryside around Dixiana, in the ridge-and-valley terrain north of Birmingham, killing 25 people and injuring 200. Violent tornadoes have returned to this part of Jefferson County again and again: an F5 struck on April 4, 1977, claiming 22 lives along a 14.7-mile track, and another F5 plowed 30.3 miles through the area on April 9, 1998, leaving 32 dead and 259 injured. On April 27, 2011, tornadoes crossed the region in waves over a single day, among them an EF4 that tracked 80.68 miles, killed 64 people, and injured 1,500.
Spring is the heart of the season here, but cold-weather tornadoes are a recurring part of local history. An F4 tracked 26.1 miles through the area on November 18, 1957; EF2 tornadoes touched down on Christmas Day, December 25, 2015; and an EF3 struck on January 26, 2021, killing one person and injuring 30.
The threat has persisted into recent years: an EF2 traveled 39.48 miles across the area on March 15, 2025, and tornadoes touched down again on November 25, 2025.
