Tornado Season — When Tornado Risk Peaks in Each Region of the US
When is tornado season?
Nationally, US tornado activity peaks from April through June, with May the single most active month — but tornado season is really a regional wave that moves with the ingredients. The Gulf Coast and Deep South peak earliest (March-May, with a genuine second season in November-December); the southern Plains peak April-June; the central and northern Plains and Upper Midwest peak June-July; Florida runs on its own summer sea-breeze and hurricane calendars. The season follows the collision zone between Gulf moisture and strong jet-stream winds as it migrates north through spring and retreats south in fall. The essential caveat: tornadoes have occurred in every state and every month — season describes the peak, not the boundaries, of risk.
Why does tornado season exist at all?
Tornado formation needs instability (warm, moist surface air), wind shear (winds changing with height), and a trigger. Deep winter has shear but no warm moisture; midsummer has moisture but weak shear as the jet stream retreats north. Spring is the overlap: Gulf moisture surges north while the jet stream is still strong and dipping across the country. Fall produces a smaller mirror-image overlap as the jet strengthens southward again — the basis of the Southeast's second season.
Season, in other words, is geography plus calendar: wherever the moisture-shear overlap sits in a given month, that's where tornado risk concentrates.
When does each region peak?
- Gulf Coast & Deep South (Dixie Alley) — primary peak March-May, active as early as January in Louisiana and Mississippi, plus a real secondary season November-December. Cool-season events here are fast-moving and disproportionately nocturnal.
- Southern Plains (OK, KS, TX) — the classic April-June season, peaking in May. Late-afternoon supercells; the season storm chasing built its calendar around.
- Central/Northern Plains & Upper Midwest — June-July peak, as the moisture-shear overlap arrives last. Derechos share this season.
- Ohio Valley & Midwest — April-June, with cool-season outbreaks possible (the 1974 Super Outbreak was April 3; the December 2021 quad-state event struck this corridor too).
- Florida — high raw counts year-round from sea-breeze storms and waterspouts moving ashore, mostly weak; the dangerous setups are winter/spring cold fronts and hurricane-embedded tornadoes in August-October.
- Northeast & West — low counts, mostly summer; not zero (every state has recorded tornadoes).
What about the time of day?
Tornadoes have a daily rhythm as well as an annual one: activity peaks between roughly 4 and 9 p.m. local time, when daytime heating maximizes instability. But the regional caveat is the important one — the Southeast's cool-season and low-level-jet-driven events routinely strike after midnight, and nocturnal tornadoes are about 2.5 times deadlier. If you live in Dixie Alley, "tornado season" partly means "the months you need a wake-you-up alert channel," not just an afternoon sky-watching habit.
Is tornado season shifting?
Two robust findings from recent research. First, the geographic center of activity has shifted east-southeast since 1979 — away from the central Plains, toward the Mid-South (Gensini & Brooks 2018) — which effectively lengthens and deepens the Southeast's exposure. Second, tornado activity has become more volatile: quieter stretches punctuated by bigger outbreak days and more significant cool-season events. Neither finding changes the basic calendar above, but both push in the same direction — more of the nation's tornado risk landing on regions where the season is longer, the storms are faster, and more of them come at night. How should I use the calendar where I live?
Use season as your preparedness clock, not a safety guarantee. Before your region's peak: test every alert channel (WEA on, weather radio batteries fresh, call alerts configured), re-walk your shelter plan, and — if you're in a mobile home — re-confirm the sturdy building you'd move to during a watch.
