About Tornadoes in Texarkana

This overview was written August 10, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Gulf of Mexico moisture rides north over the piney flats toward Texarkana on a strengthening low-level jet, and when spring fronts and dry air arrive with strong winds aloft, the shear can turn thunderstorms into tornadic supercells. The local history reflects the setup: an F2 tornado moved through on February 12, 1950, killing a resident and injuring eight people. On April 30, 1954, an F3 tracked 111.6 miles across the region on a path roughly a mile wide. March 13, 1971 brought an F4 to the edge of the city, and on April 2, 1982 an F3 killed five people nearby. On December 23, 1982, an F2 traveled 25 miles, proof the season extends past spring. An EF3 carved a 15.65-mile path on November 5, 2022, and an EF2 followed on April 5, 2025.

Geography does much of the work. Texarkana sits astride the Texas–Arkansas line in the low Red River basin, where the gentle coastal plain offers little to block returning Gulf moisture. Storms organizing along drylines and fronts farther west often mature as they cross the Ark-La-Tex, and the flat river bottoms allow long, uninterrupted damage paths — the 1954 and 2003 tracks show how far a tornado can travel here. Cool-season Gulf returns extend the threat into autumn and winter, as the 2022 EF3 demonstrated. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center maintains the archive behind the event list elsewhere on this page.
