When spring warmth first surges up the Red River valley, Paris, Texas, enters its tornado months, a window that typically opens in late March and holds through early summer. The city's history shows what that season can deliver. An F3 tornado injured 12 people at Paris on April 30, 1954, an early entry in the modern survey era. On May 14, 1981, an F4 carved an 8.8-mile path through the area, injuring 30. April 2, 1982, was harsher still: an F4 tracked 23 miles near the city, killing 10 and injuring 170, while an F3 the same day ran 32 miles and claimed a life. Decades later, on November 4, 2022, an EF4 tore a 44.71-mile swath up to 1,700 yards wide, injuring 11, and a companion EF4 that night covered 60.23 miles, injuring 13 more.
