Garland sits on gently rolling Blackland Prairie at the northeastern edge of Dallas County, its low-relief terrain interrupted only by Duck Creek and the nearby shoreline of Lake Ray Hubbard. Nothing in that landscape blunts the ingredients of severe weather: humid Gulf of Mexico air streams north across open prairie unimpeded, pooling ahead of the dryline that sharpens over west Texas each spring. When jet-stream disturbances ride over that boundary, storms firing to the west can organize into rotating supercells before they arrive over eastern Dallas County, and the flat ground offers a mature tornado a long, unobstructed runway. Clashing cold fronts and lingering Gulf moisture keep autumn and even winter in play as well.
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's archive for the Garland area documents that vulnerability across decades. An F3 raked the area on April 2, 1957, killing 10 people and injuring 200. On April 26, 1994, an F4 roughly 800 yards wide killed 3 people and injured 48. The threat extends beyond springtime, too: an EF4 struck after dark on December 27, 2015, killing 10 and injuring 468, and an EF3 on October 21, 2019 cut a damaging path through the area's northern suburbs.
