Mattapan is a residential neighborhood on the southern edge of Boston, near the Neponset River in the coastal lowlands of eastern Massachusetts. Southern New England lies outside the country's principal tornado belts, but it is not tornado-free: the region records tornadoes in most years, and its history holds a small number of powerful ones.
