A long-track F3 tornado tore across the Slidell area on May 20, 1980, cutting a 13.1-mile path up to 800 yards wide, injuring 8 people and causing roughly $27.5 million in damage. That storm fit a pattern written into the local geography: Slidell sits on flat, low-lying ground between the northeastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and the swamps of the Pearl River basin, terrain that gives deep Gulf of Mexico moisture an unobstructed path inland. When winter and early-spring cold fronts and a strong subtropical jet sweep across that moist air, the resulting wind shear can spin up tornadoes even in the cooler months.
The cool-season threat has returned repeatedly. On February 13, 2007, an EF2 killed a resident and injured 10 people.
