About Tornadoes in Slidell

This overview was written August 10, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

A long-track F3 tornado tore across the Slidell area on May 20, 1980, cutting a 13.1-mile path up to 800 yards wide, injuring 8 people and causing roughly $27.5 million in damage. That storm fit a pattern written into the local geography: Slidell sits on flat, low-lying ground between the northeastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and the swamps of the Pearl River basin, terrain that gives deep Gulf of Mexico moisture an unobstructed path inland. When winter and early-spring cold fronts and a strong subtropical jet sweep across that moist air, the resulting wind shear can spin up tornadoes even in the cooler months.

The cool-season threat has returned repeatedly. On February 13, 2007, an EF2 killed a resident and injured 10 people. On February 7, 2017, paired tornadoes swept the area, an EF2 that traveled 23.08 miles and an EF3 that injured 33 people. An EF3 on March 23, 2022, claimed a life along an 11.47-mile track, and an EF2 on December 14, 2022, injured 10 and caused damage approaching $150 million.

Activity here stretches from the 1950s into the 2020s, a persistence preserved in the NOAA Storm Prediction Center record that underlies the event list elsewhere on this page. For Slidell, tornadoes are less a seasonal visitor than a standing feature of life between the lake and the river.
