Jefferson County, home to Louisville along the Ohio River, carries a tornado history that runs deep in the modern files kept by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. An F2 crossed the area on March 26, 1964, tracking 38.4 miles and injuring one person. The defining date, though, is April 3, 1974, when the Super Outbreak sent multiple tornadoes through the region: an F5 traveled 68 miles, killing 6 people and injuring 86, while an F4 roughly 1,200 yards wide killed 11 and injured 190. Strong tornadoes have returned in the decades since. An F4 on May 28, 1996 carved a 30-mile path through the metro area. On March 2, 2012, an EF4 tracked 46.6 miles and took 11 lives.
The reason lies in geography. Louisville sits in the lower Ohio Valley, where warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico streams north each spring and collides with cooler continental air riding a still-energetic jet stream. When moisture, instability, and strong wind shear line up ahead of an advancing cold front, the region can support long-track, intense tornadoes of the kind seen in 1974 and 2012.
