Park View sits in Northwest Washington, D.C., and the tornadoes that have touched its surrounding area have arrived mostly in the warm months, when humid Mid-Atlantic air feeds late-day storms across the District and its close-in Maryland and Virginia suburbs.
On April 1, 1973, an F3 tornado tore along a 9.8-mile path through the area, injuring 37 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. Late summer and early fall have produced destructive tornadoes as well: an F3 on September 5, 1979 tracked 17.9 miles with a path as wide as 300 yards, killing one person and injuring six, and on September 24, 2001 an F3 carved a 17.5-mile track 200 yards wide, killing two people and injuring 55.
Recent seasons have kept the neighborhood watchful. An EF2 on September 1, 2021 stayed on the ground for 11.43 miles, and on June 5, 2024 an EF1 followed a 15.16-mile path, injuring five people and doing $5,000,000 in damage. As recently as June 18, 2025, an EF0 touched down in the area, a reminder that even brief, weaker tornadoes remain part of life in the capital region.
