Activity here clusters from spring into early fall, and damaging tornadoes have arrived repeatedly in September.
On September 24, 2001, an F3 tornado tore a 17.5-mile path as much as 200 yards wide through the area, killing 2 people and injuring 55. Decades earlier, on April 1, 1973, an F3 tracked 9.8 miles, injuring 37 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. Another September F3, on September 5, 1979, killed 1 person and injured 6 along a 17.9-mile track.
