About Tornadoes in NoMa

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

NoMa's rowhouse blocks, rail yards, and new high-rises just north of Union Station sit at the center of the District of Columbia, and tornadoes have repeatedly tracked through the city and its close-in Maryland and Virginia suburbs, from early-spring storms to the late-summer and September systems that have produced some of the area's roughest weather.

On April 1, 1973, an F3 tornado carved a 9.8-mile path about 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 37 people and causing $27.5 million in property damage. An F3 on September 5, 1979 tracked 17.9 miles, killing one person and injuring six. Another F3 struck on September 24, 2001, running 17.5 miles with a width of 200 yards; two people died and 55 were injured along its track.

Recent years have stayed active. An EF2 on September 1, 2021 traveled 11.43 miles through the region, and on June 5, 2024 an EF1 tracked 15.16 miles, injuring five people and causing $5 million in damage. Weaker tornadoes remain a familiar part of local summers — EF1s touched down on July 2, 2021 and July 5, 2022 — and an EF0 was confirmed in the area on June 18, 2025.
