El Mirage lies along the Agua Fria River in Maricopa County, on the northwest edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area, and its tornado history keeps desert time. Many of the tornadoes verified near the city have come with the North American monsoon, touching down between June and October as tropical moisture surges across the Valley, while a separate cluster of winter events in January and February reflects the Pacific storm systems that occasionally cross Arizona.
On June 22, 1972, an F2 tornado tracked 13.5 miles through the area on a path just 10 yards wide, injuring three people and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Other F2 tornadoes have struck as well: one on October 4, 1968 injured three people and did $275,000 in damage along a short path; a brief F2 touched down on September 15, 1971; and a winter-season F2 on January 17, 1993 ran 2.1 miles and caused $2.75 million in damage.
More recently, EF0 tornadoes were confirmed near El Mirage on October 6, 2015, August 4, 2017, and October 23, 2018, and EF0 touchdowns came again on November 29, 2019 — late-autumn reminders that the area's tornado threat is not confined to the summer monsoon season.
