Chandler lies on the flat desert floor of Maricopa County, in the East Valley southeast of Phoenix, where tornado weather typically arrives with the summer monsoon — surges of Gulf of California moisture that fuel afternoon thunderstorms across the Salt River Valley.
The monsoon seasons of the early 1970s produced damaging tornadoes here. An F2 struck on August 31, 1971, injuring 41 people along a 4.7-mile path up to 400 yards wide and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. The following summer brought another burst of activity: tornadoes touched down on both June 21 and June 22, 1972, including an F2 on June 22 that tracked 13.5 miles and caused $27,500,000 in property damage. Earlier, on July 5, 1968, an F2 injured two people on a short, narrow track through the area.
Cool-season storms can spin up tornadoes in the Valley as well. An F2 on January 17, 1993, carved a 2.1-mile path and caused $2,750,000 in damage, and on November 29, 2019, a cluster of EF0 tornadoes touched down around the area in a single day. As recently as October 16, 2022, an EF0 was recorded near Chandler — a reminder that even the desert Southwest's generally weaker tornadoes remain a recurring part of the city's weather story.
