What happened Thursday evening

Neither tornado has received an EF rating as of this writing. The National Weather Service will conduct damage surveys when warranted to determine intensity and path characteristics.

Ninety-five wind reports were filed across the central United States. A measured 67 mph gust was recorded near Brandon, Mississippi, using a handheld anemometer at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 80. Wyoming saw multiple measured gusts between 58 and 67 mph from mesonet stations and Department of Transportation sensors as storms moved across the central part of the state.
Widespread tree damage was reported across the Ohio Valley, with the NWS office in Pittsburgh documenting multiple trees down on homes in the Lashley area of Guernsey County, Ohio. In Missouri, a large tree snapped and fell onto a garage in Ferguson.

Dewpoints in the lower 70s°F provided ample moisture, while "some enhancement of the background westerly flow" contributed to organized severe storm development. The SPC outlook stated that "a couple of tornadoes are possible with supercell activity as well as scattered damaging gusts with the more organized multicells and related clusters."
Farther west across the High Plains, the SPC described "a seasonably anomalous upper trough over the West" with "a lead disturbance ejecting northeastward into the northern High Plains during the Day 1 period." Pronounced lee troughing and a surface low over southeast Montana by late evening contributed to the severe weather environment across Wyoming and Montana.
