TL;DR
Eight tornadoes were reported across Colorado and Nebraska on Saturday, May 30, 2026, as severe thunderstorms swept the High Plains. Where the tornadoes occurred
All eight tornado reports came from a corridor stretching from the Nebraska Panhandle into northeast Colorado, an area where landspout tornadoes are common during late spring and early summer.
The first tornado was reported at 2225 UTC (4:25 PM MDT) approximately 10 miles south-southeast of Bushnell, Nebraska. According to the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne (NWS CYS), Kimball County Emergency Management reported an ongoing tornado that was also indicated on radar imagery. No damage was reported from this event.
Half an hour later, at 2255 UTC, another tornado was confirmed about 9 miles south-southeast of Bushnell with video showing "ground circulation being tilted and stretched into thunderstorm updraft," according to NWS CYS.
Colorado tornadoes
Colorado saw five tornado reports Saturday evening, beginning at 0000 UTC (6:00 PM MDT) approximately 10 miles east-southeast of Clarkville. The NWS office in Goodland (NWS GLD) received multiple reports from trained spotters and storm chasers of a funnel cloud with a dust swirl at the ground.
Additional tornadoes were reported near Paoli, Colorado at 0005 UTC, 9 miles south-southeast of Wages at 0008 UTC, and 10 miles northwest of Wauneta at 0009 UTC. The Wauneta tornado was described as "ongoing as of time of report" by NWS GLD.
The final two tornadoes of the day occurred back in Nebraska: 9 miles north of Wellfleet at 0028 UTC and 11 miles northeast of Dickens at 0045 UTC. The Dickens tornado was classified as a landspout by NWS North Platte (NWS LBF).
Baseball-sized hail near Bushnell
The most significant hail report came from the same area that saw multiple tornadoes. At 2233 UTC (4:33 PM MDT), baseball-sized hail measuring 2.75 inches in diameter fell approximately 6.3 miles southeast of Bushnell, Nebraska. According to NWS CYS, "multiple windows were destroyed" by the hail, which was reported on a delay with timing estimated from radar reflectivity.
The same location received a second report of 2.75-inch hail at 2253 UTC in a corrected storm report.
Other notable hail reports included:
- 1.56 inches (between golf ball and tennis ball size) 10 miles north-northwest of Wauneta, Colorado at 2300 UTC, measured by a storm chaser
- 1.75 inches (golf ball size) 7 miles south of Bushnell, Nebraska at 2200 UTC, accompanied by hail accumulation that led to localized flash flooding in rural Kimball County
- 1.50 inches (ping pong ball size) in Akron, Colorado at 2215 UTC and multiple locations in Nebraska and South Dakota
In total, 61 hail reports were filed across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Texas, Missouri, and Georgia.
Damaging winds and structural damage
Severe wind reports began earlier in the day, with the first damage reported at 1952 UTC (2:52 PM CDT) in Clinton, Arkansas, where multiple trees were uprooted.
The most significant wind damage occurred at 2016 UTC in Gravesville, Arkansas, where a large hardwood tree was blown down onto a house, causing major structural damage according to NWS Little Rock (NWS LZK).
In Missouri, extensive damage to a kennel, well, and barn was reported at 2110 UTC approximately 2 miles east-southeast of Jasper. Multiple trees were uprooted near Walnut Grove, Missouri at 2235 UTC.
The highest measured wind gust was 72 mph at Kingsley Dam, Nebraska at 2327 UTC, recorded by NWS North Platte. A 70 mph gust was reported 5 miles north-northwest of Halstead, Kansas at 2330 UTC, where a large branch was downed along with smaller limbs.
Seventy-five wind reports were filed across Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Texas.
Atmospheric setup
The severe weather developed in an environment of moderately strong southwesterly flow aloft extending from the Four Corners region into the Midwest. According to the Storm Prediction Center's Day 1 Convective Outlook valid for May 31, water vapor imagery showed several weak shortwave troughs embedded in the flow, providing large-scale lift for thunderstorm development.
The High Plains tornado reports occurred in an area where steep low- and mid-level lapse rates—rapid temperature decreases with height—supported strong updrafts capable of stretching surface vorticity into tornadoes. Many of the tornadoes reported Saturday evening appear to have been landspouts, a type of tornado that forms along boundaries and converging winds rather than from rotating supercell mesocyclones.
Farther east, very warm and humid conditions prevailed across southeast Kansas and southern Missouri, with mixed-layer CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) values reaching 3000-4000 J/kg. The SPC noted that forecast soundings suggested sufficient vertical wind shear to support supercells and bowing line segments capable of large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
No injuries reported
As of this writing, no injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with Saturday's severe weather. The tornadoes occurred in sparsely populated rural areas of the High Plains, and most hail and wind damage was limited to agricultural areas, trees, and isolated structures.
The baseball-sized hail near Bushnell caused property damage in the form of broken windows, but no injuries were mentioned in NWS storm reports.
